Until the last breath - Moving in trying times …

I am a great believer you can’t wait for things to happen - you have to make them happen!

A piece of paradise ...

Over the last few months we would have been forgiven for believing “the end was nigh” that we were living right in the middle of the best apocalypse movie ever made! Yes, there were times I for one woke in the middle of the night hoping the bloody Covid was just some sick bad dream …

To be honest this whole last year has had that kind of damned feeling. Genie and I have always had a project to work in diving together. Don’t mind saying we have worked hard to make it happen, however at every turn it just seemed it wasn’t meant to be.

A dream job out in Mexico turned to a sad disappointment when we lost the last of our life savings with the collapse of several tour companies & more precisely XL Airways. And just as we had began to get our lives back on track with a sweet little dive centre management position, this time a little closer to home, in Spain voila, bonjour and hello the beginning of the Covid Pandemic! At least this time we weren’t alone, the whole world suffered & is still suffering this one!

And so we made the decision to return to Martinique; we had been there before but when we left we knew we would be back, we had unfinished business …

Returning to Martinique was an evidence ...

Throughout the last 3 months, and side by side with the health crisis a finally tuned plan was executed to get back home, to get back out to Martinique: the little Caribbean island with a touch of “oh la la”!

Abiding by the strictest Covid rules, taking extra precautions at every step of our move overseas, including first heading up to the north of France from our home in the Oriental Pyrenees, where we carried out another month of confinement with family, we finally boarded the plane in Paris armed with our negative for Covid test results - direction Fort de France, Martinique!

The airport was stressful, really stressful! From the deserted & eery emptiness of a summertime airport where you would normally be drowned out by the hustle & bustle of tens of thousands of travellers making their way to dream destinations throughout the world - it’s strange to say I know but we almost missed them!

Never seen an empty airport in the summer before ...

We had to give credit to the almost military precision with which Air Caribbean, our airline operator, carried out their mission of getting us all on the plane safely while abiding to all the restrictions imposed by the Martinique government. I must add that from my point of view, with my English passport, there were moments when I thought I wasn’t getting on the plane! After almost an hour at check-in, a ton of paperwork exchanges, with boarding passes in hand we realised this time was our time!

And another stroke of luck, or reward for determination, a little gift in way of an upgrade onboard of our almost empty plane! The usual plastic goblets made way for real glasses & fizzy water for champagne. Hopefully a sign of things to come!

Class ...

The 8 hour flight to Martinique to our new life, just the two of us together, a row of seats at our sole disposal, took off on time & we finally believed fate was on our side …

So after a couple of days here, exhausted from the most horrendous year of our lives, and yes back in confinement for another week & hopefully a 2nd negative for Covid test result, we are looking forward for our next dive adventures! Let’s face it that’s why we are here!

The colours of Martinique ...

And if there’s a moral to this tale - it’s simply this - never give up! Life rewards those that follow their dreams; just up to their last breath.

I will leave you here - for the moment … and if you want to follow us on our adventures then subscribe to the blog … better still come join us, come dive with us - we will be more than happy to welcome you to this little piece of paradise out in the middle of the Caribbean!
